Epiphany Meets ECG Management Needs
By Jon L. Brubaker, MD Buyline Clinical Analyst
When looking for an ECG management system, most hospitals go right to the vendor from which they purchased their ECG system. Historically, ECG management systems consisted of proprietary hardware and software and it was a foregone conclusion that you had to purchase the solution from your ECG vendor. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this, many hospitals have always wanted another option. Epiphany Cardiography Products now offers an alternative that provides a multi-vendor, multimodality database for the collection, editing and archiving of ECG data.
This newcomer to the market sells the Cardio Server ECG management system, which can import data from a variety of acquisition devises and supports a variety of communication formats including HL7, XML, ASCII, PDF, and RTF.
Epiphany offers healthcare facilities an alternative to the single vendor solution for ECG management. Based on MD Buyline member activity, GE dominates this market with its MUSE cardiology management system. Philips, Cardiac Science (Quinton/Burdick) and Mortara also are players. New customers, as well as installed sites wishing to upgrade their ECG management systems, now have the option to look at a third party source for these needs.
Epiphany markets an offering of 45 modality integrations from 25 vendors, allowing customers to use existing equipment. The company’s current list of device interfaces is considered to represent what is installed in most hospitals. Until now, mixing vendor products has been a deterrent because hospitals feel with the large capital investment they have made in current equipment, changing vendors would be prohibitive.
The Epiphany software allows the physician's edited report to be exported to an electronic medical record. Both alphanumeric and waveform data is transmitted. The software can include modalities such as Holter and stress in addition to ECG data and accepts orders and can export to the hospital billing modality.
Epiphany's approach is to work with both the clinical and the information technology teams. This multimodality, multi-vendor approach addresses clinical compatibility problems. MD Buyline is beginning to see customers considering the Cardio Server ECG management system and will be talking to people at installed sites in the near future. If your facility is in the market for an ECG management solution, today you have many optional vendors to choose from. Epiphany Cardiography Products is one you may want to consider.
